With almost 20 years
of experience in both clay and wax sculpture, Renate
Burgyan learned by doing. A
graduate from the OSU School of Journalism, Renate turned her
interest to sculpture following a life threatening illness at
age 30. She has studied at the Columbus Cultural Art Center,
Columbus College of Art and Design, Johnson’s Atelier, Columbia
University and also with nationally know patina expert, Ron
Young. Her work has been influenced by travel throughout
Europe and Asia, as well as by sculptors such as
Rodin,
Michaelangelo, and Degas.
Using the ancient
lost wax method of bronze casting, Renate has personally
participated in all phases of the bronze casting process,
including the bronze pour, patination,
and outdoor installation. Her work is found in public and
private collections across the United States. She has completed
numerous commissions for clients such as Wendy’s International,
Charity Newsies, and the Herb
Society of America. Her work is part of the permanent
collection of Women in the Arts in America in Washington D.C. as
well as the White House. Featured sculptures are published in
The Well Designed Mixed Garden by Tracy
Disabato-Aust. A permanent installation can be found
locally at Inniswood Gardens in
Westerville, Ohio.
Renate conducts
afternoon and evening sculpture classes at Chrysalis Studio on
Overbrook Ravine, Columbus. She is also part of the Greater
Columbus Arts Council Artist-in-the-Schools program.
